[HELP] Using Towny Advanced

Towny Basic Command Tutorials

When you first log on, you'll be registered as a citizen of the server. You won't be a resident of a town yet, however. You'll need to find one to join first. The resident help menu can be viewed by typing:



  • /resident ?

All active residents are listed on the general server resident list:



  • /resident list

You can view information about yourself by typing:



  • /resident

There will only be a few bits of information at first. Most of the info in the beginning there should be self-explanatory.


Now let's jump ahead to after you've made friends with a town mayor, and have been added as a resident of that town. If you were ever to want to stop being a citizen of the town, you can do this easily with:



  • /town leave

Something that you can do while you are in the town is two bring up a map of it:



  • /towny map

Towns are made up of 8 block by 8 block "town blocks." This will display where all of the town blocks are, and hence where the borders are and where protections end. Outside of those borders are wild areas. The map key is on the right side.




Tax Tutorial


One thing to be sure of is to always have enough money to pay for the taxes that your town charges. Type:



  • /towny prices

You will see an upkeep line under your town name. It lists the current daily tax rates for residents. You'll need to have enough money to pay them each day (real time day).


If you don't have enough to money to pay the residential tax, you will be kicked out of the town.





Guide for Town Mayors


Starting up a new Town Tutorial


The first step is to make sure you have enough money to start a town.
The current new town fee is always available with this command:



  • /towny prices

If you have the money, then go find a bit of land and create a town:



  • /town new

Or in its shorter form:



  • /town new

If you decide you don't like the name or if there was a typo, you can change your town's name with:



  • /town set name [town-name]

You are now the mayor of a new town. The 16 block by 16 block area of land that you were standing on when you created it will become the central point of your town, or the home block. Later you can add more of these 8x8 chunks of land - or town blocks - to expand the size of your town.


Let's check the details of your town with this:




  • /town

There's various info there - how much money your town has, the name of the mayor and town, the number of residents, etc. We will work with permissions later.


Let's first look at what it says next to "Town size" - 1/1. This is the number of town blocks that currently make up your town on the right side of the slash, and the total number that you can claim for your town. Right now, with 1 resident (you), your town can only use 1 block. You need to add a new resident to increase this number.


So it's time to ask someone to join your town. When they agree to join, you use this command to add them:



  • /town add

Now use the /t command again and you should see 'Town Size: 1/8' This means you can claim 7 more 8x8 town block.


But before you can claim new town blocks, you will need money to pay the claim fee. Let's deposit a bit of money into your town bank account, from your personal bank account:



  • /town deposit 100

Now use the /t command again and you should see 150 money in the town bank account.


So let's claim another town block. Walk about 10 blocks in any direction that you want to expand your town in, till you see "Wilderness" in your chat window. Then use this command:




  • /town claim

You should see a message that says you annexed land. Walk in another direction that you want to expand into till you see "Wilderness" and use /t claim again. Your town now owns 2 more blocks. If you make a mistake, you can unclaim a town block with this:



  • /town unclaim

Let's bring up the basic Towny map to see your town blocks:



  • /towny map

This is simple map showing you the basic layout of your town blocks. The H is your central home block. The orange one is where you are standing. The town blocks marked with a "+" are blocks that your town now owns. You can use this map to help plot out your town blocks and claims.


If you want to have the map pop up in chat automatically when you walk between 8x8 town blocks, use this command:



  • /rr set mode map

But if decide you don't like this auto map mode you can turn it off again with this:



  • /rr set mode reset

You can continue claiming plots up to the maximum as long as your town bank has enough money in it.


Also keep in mind that there is a daily (24 hour real time) upkeep fee to maintain your town. Always keep enough money in your town bank to pay that fee, or your town risks crumbling into the ruins of
history.


You can check the current upkeep fees with this:



  • /towny prices

Outposts


What are they?

Outposts let you claim an area of land that's not connected to your town. So, your main town could be in the southeast corner of the map but your "outpost" could be in the northwest corner.

How big are they?

Same size as a regular town block. 8x8 [verification needed]

Are they taxed?

Yes, they utilize your town's tax rate.

Is there a distance limit?

No [Verification Needed]

Do they have to be associated with a town?

Yes.

Can I build one on the outskirts of an enemy town?

Just as with towns, they have be a certain distance away from another town.


Tax Tutorial


As mayor you can also set taxes.


To set a daily tax on all your residents, use this:



  • /town set taxes [amount]

Proceeds from these taxes will be collected once per real time day (24 hours) and deposited into the town's bank account.



Assigning Town Permissions Tutorial


Mayors are able to set town permissions that affect all townblocks within the town that are unowned.


Use the /t command to bring up your town details. The permissions line is represented with B=fao D=fao S=fao I=fao. The capital letters stand for the type of permission:



  • Build permissions for block placement
  • Destroy permissions for block removal
  • Switch usage for items like levers and buttons
  • Item Use permissions for items like buckets and lighters

The lower case are the groups that permissions can be assigned to:



  • f = resident
  • a = ally
  • o = outsiders

When you see those letters, you are allowing permission for that group. The minus symbol "-" is used to show that you are denying the permission for that group.


The default permissions turns off all permissions for outsiders, but allows all permissions for your town residents, and allies. Allies can be members of other towns that belong to the same Nation as your town does.


Let's say that you want to also turn off all permissions for allies as well. This is the command format you'd use:



  • /town set perm [resident/ally/outsider] [on/off]

For example:



  • /town set perm ally off

Or, if you only wanted to turn off a specific permission for allies, you'd use:



  • /town set perm [resident/ally/outsider] [build/destroy/switch] [on/off]

For example:



  • /town set perm ally destroy off

Note: there's also an "item_use" permission to update for the above command, but it doesn't work at this time.


You can also turn permissions on and off across the board for everything:



  • /town set perm [on/off]

One more thing. What if you're feeling overworked, or you need some administrative help while you are offline for a couple days. You have couple of options. First, you could transfer the mayorship over to someone else:



  • /town set mayor [resident-name]

Or you can recruit a few of your town residents to assist you. Assistants are able to help change permissions, add/remove residents and set up plots.



  • /town assistant [add/remove] [resident-name]

Other Mayor Commands



  • /town set board [message] - this is displayed user players when they view your town details
  • /town set homeblock - This moves the central home block. This may be useful in wartime (described in a future tutorial).
  • /town kick [playername] - To remove a resident from a town.
  • /town delete [town-name] - Delete a town.
  • /town withdraw/deposit [amount] - Withdraw or deposit money from the town's bank account.





Guide for using Towny Chat Channels


You are able to chat in specific channels for your town and nation:



  • /tc - Chat with other residents of your town


  • /nc - Chat with other members of your nation

If you don't want to type to command first (eg. /tc), you can switch into a chat mode to chat normally:

Town chat mode:



  • /rr set mode tc

Nation chat mode:



  • /rr set mode nc

To switch back out of either of those two modes, use:


/rr set mode reset

Towns

Towns are the most basic part of Towny, allowing people to gather and work together as a group.


  • A town is a collection of residents with one of them as the mayor.
  • A town also has a bank which the mayor can withdraw from.
  • A mayor can also have assistants who have the same powers as him/herself.
  • Towns can have taxes that will be taken at the end of real time 24-hour period.
  • A person can only be a resident of 1 town at a time.
  • Towns are divided into "Town Blocks," which are 8 block by 8 block sections of land.
  • The more residents a town has, the more "Town Blocks" it can claim. This is how a town expands in size.
Nations

Nations are a higher level that allow towns to ally together. This adds advantages such as giving towns more flexible land permission options and allowing them to participate in Server Event Wars.


  • A nation is a collection of towns (or just one town) with one of them as the capital city.
  • The mayor of that capital is the king.
  • A nation can join the war event, as well as ally other nations.
  • A nation also has it's own bank.
  • It can also tax the towns that belong to it.

OutPosts


Outposts let you claim an area of land that's not connected to your town.



  • Same size as a regular town block.
  • They utilize your town's tax rate.
  • They DO have to be associated with a town.
  • Just as towns, they have to be a certain distance away from another town.
  • Costs Tellerium to start. See current cost ingame via /towny prices
Wartime

Wars are server wide events that all Nations are able to participate in.


  • Wars are started by OPs.
  • Nations do have the option to pay a small fee to remain neutral in the war. This excludes them from the monetary losses/gains that wars involve.
  • Those Nations participating will either declare other nations enemies or allies. Those set as enemies will be who they fight.
  • There is a War Spoils bank account that money will be collected in. Money is contributed to the account during the war as players perform various actions against enemy players and towns. At theend of the war, the victorious Nation or group of allied Nations will split the winnings from this account.
  • There is also a point system where points are gained or lost due to actions against enemy players and towns. A scoreboard is presented in chat at the conclusion of the war.
  • When the war starts, all non-neutral nations have their towns converted into a warzone. Each town block in the warzone is given hitpoints (HP). A town's central "Home block" has more HPs, but when it's lost, the entire town loses and is removed from the war.
  • When an enemy player enters a warzone, the HP of the town block begins to drop. The residents of that town must protect that area. If the HP of the town block is reduced to zero, the winning side scores a point, and the losing side loses a point.
  • Those that kill enemy players will gain money from the dead player's bank account. If the dead player no money, it's taken from the player's town bank account. When the town is bankrupted, the town is removed from the war.

Town Population Requirements


Number of the residents that are required to expand the number of town blocks that can be claimed. "Town blocks" are 8x8 blocks in size.
